Dear Class of 2020

To the many wonderful Seniors I know who have had their last year of High School turned upside down, inside out and backwards....

Dear Class of 2020,

Every year for as long as you can remember every April you have gotten the unpleasant privilege of participating in "end of the year" state mandated testing. These tests are designed to assess your accumulation of knowledge and skills for that particular school year. These tests are often met with groans from both you and your teachers. You and your teachers would rather continue the learning process but alas the tests are mandated and thus must be completed.

Despite the 2019-2020 coming to an abrupt end in the normal fanfare, excitement and pomp and circumstance of your Senior year, you find yourself being given one final state mandated "end of the year test" this April. This test looks very different than the others. This test does not require scan trons, #2 pencils or a computer.  This test does not require silence and limited personal items near you. This test will not provide you with a score or percentile ranking. This test is not just evaluating what you have learned this past school year. This test is not written to see how much knowledge you have gained and can regurgitate. And this test is definitely not multiple choice.

The test you face this April is evaluating your character as a person. The test this April is testing your ability to be flexible. The test this April is assessing your problem solving skills like never before. The test this April is the one test that will truly give your parents and teachers (and yourself) an idea of how well you will succeed in your future. For many the test this April could very well be the one of the hardest tests you have had up to this point in your life.

The state mandated test this year is filled with unknown variables. The state mandated test this year may will cause you to feel disappointed, sad, mad, frustrated, or outright angry and may even cause a few tears or even ugly crying. The state mandated test this year will stay in your memory longer than perhaps any other part of your education up to this point. The state mandated test this year has only question...

What do you do when LIFE does not go as planned?

Here it is 9 months since you wrote this. I think I am still taking this test and trying to deal with life when it isn't as I planned. Great question! How am I doing? This is a daily question. Ok, I think! Am I passing? How high is my grade? I think that isn't answered yet. Thanks for making me think, Tracy. Mom
