Lava River Cave

Now that summer is over and the kiddos are back in school it is time to get to work and document our summer adventures!

We had visitors for our first day of summer vacation (it was also Memorial Day weekend) . . . the Andruski's. They are always up for an adventure when they come to visit so we took them to explore the Lava River Cave, near Flagstaff with us.

Visiting the Lava River Cave has been on our bucket list of things to do as a family for some time now.

I was a little nervous about how John would handle being in a dark cold cave, but he loved it and did great as we explored along the approximate 3/4 mile long lava tube.

It was fun to have cousins along who were willing to hold a hand, share a head lamp and to keep each other company.

Sarah & Elizabeth were especially grateful that Uncle Mike brought his "Mary Poppins backpack" full of all sorts of goodies . . . gloves for Elizabeth's cold fingers & a glow stick to entertain our princess.

As I walked along in the cave enjoying the quiet stillness I assumed the rocks over, under & around us were black or dark grey. Well, why not? Isn't black the color of rocks from a lava flow? I was surprised to learn otherwise. If it wasn't for pictures like the one above I would have had no idea of the beautiful colors within the cave.

So glad we took the time to go explore!
