Cherum Peak

Over Memorial Day Weekend we were blessed with a visit from my brother & his family. On Saturday we thought it would be fun to go exploring, (AKA hiking). Paul chose Cherum Peak as our destination.

Cherum Peak is one of the tallest peaks around and is located about 20-30 minutes west of Kingman.  After turning off the highway & driving on a dirt road, sometimes steep, for about 10 miles we arrived at the trail head & began our adventure.

The weather was unusually cool for the end of May, but perfect for hiking . . .

and the wild flowers were gorgeous!

Because we were hiking to a "peak" the majority of the hike was up! Not super steep, but up nonetheless.

Which meant I had some little boys who got tired & wanted to rest, a lot!

But they kept going putting one little foot in front of the other, collecting sticks (fabulous distraction by the way), sipping water, eating jolly ranchers & looking for critters.

I must note that a miracle occurred on this adventure! I believe this was the first hike I have taken with my kiddos where I heard little to no whining or complaining! Oh blessed day!!! I'm not sure this miracle occurred because they finally have fallen in love with hiking, but rather because there was a promise of frozen yogurt on the way home, contingent on the amount of complaining I heard. Bribe . . .maybe? Reward . . . definitely! Would I do it again . . . in a heart beat to enjoy the beauty & solitude of the outdoors with out the whine!

Well, the higher we went the more awesome the view! Until we made it to the top!

Ok, almost to the top. We stopped a half mile from the summit. The hike took significantly longer than expected due to the various hiking speeds of the various hikers in the group.  We opted to stay together & head back before we got rained on & so we could make it home before dark (we still had a bit of a drive once we got back to the cars).

Even without reaching the summit we enjoyed some breath taking views of the desert below . . .

. . .and very much enjoyed the time we could spend together, making memories with cousins!
