Right of Passage
There are certain moments/events in motherhood that are like a "right of passage." A "right" to join the group of mom's who are circled around sharing stories that begin with "You wouldn't believe what happened . . ." and "passage" from the "I would never club" to "yep, been there done that club".
Two such events occurred at our house tonight: I made my first call to 911. Kind of scary, nerve racking, but I honestly didn't know what else to do. The second event embarrassingly necessitated the first event: I locked a child in the van along with the keys! Even more scary and nerve racking.
Elizabeth & I were getting in the van to go to a youth fireside at the church. I had buckled Jacob in his car seat closed his door and realized my keys were sitting on the front seat of the car & the doors were all locked. Yikes! The only other key we have is on Paul's key ring in Virginia with him on a business trip, not due home until Friday night.
My first thought was to call a neighbor; but what was he going to do? The next thought was call 911; given that it was 96 degrees today and my baby is only 17 months old I considered this an emergency! Waiting for someone to come and rescue my sweet baby seemed like an eternity, but in reality was only about 5 minutes. Jacob giggled as we played peek-a-boo through the window.
There wasn't much the firemen could do, other than break a window. Oh goodness! Better a broken window than a dead baby. But first they decided to try a lock smith they knew who happened to live a few blocks away. Thankfully he was home and more than willing to come right on over. He was successful! No broken window, just a bill for $50, (a small price to pay when you consider the alternative). And Jacob was free from his nearly 30 minute confinement.
Jacob came through the whole ordeal happy and smiling. When we got back in the house, he helped himself to a cup and a bowl, and walked over to the fridge. The cup for a drink & the bowl for some crushed ice. We sat at the table having a little "snack" to cool off, all the while being so very grateful for our new heroes!
Thank you Kingman fire department for responding quickly. Thank you Northwest Lock & Safe for rescuing my baby. Thank you Heavenly Father for watching over us and helping us remain calm.
