Christmas Traditions: Part 5

Since Paul & I spent our first Christmas together as a couple we haven taken time on Christmas Eve to read from Luke 2 of the birth of our Savior.  As we have added children to our family we have incorporated things to keep them involved and interested as we read from the Bible, in hopes they will come to know and love "Christmas Story".  I believe it was 5 years ago that for the first time we decided to dress-up, give everyone a part and "act out" the story as Paul read.

This is one of those traditions that I hear the kiddos talking about weeks before Christmas.  I overhear them discussing who should play what part.  In the end I usually have to assign parts to keep the peace.  The big debate this year was who would Jacob be?  The girls thought he should be baby Jesus, Ha! Ha!  I decided he needed to be whatever Mom or Dad was so we could keep him in the play.  So it was decided that he would be a Wiseman as both Paul & I were going to be Wisemen.

As I brought out the costumes Jacob got a hold of the shepherds staff (a cane that belonged to Paul's Grandpa Westergard) and would not let go of it without a fuss.  Ok, no problem I grabbed a new costume for him and he would instead be a shepherd with Rachel.

He was so cute walking around with his staff.  All was going well until, while waiting for his turn, he discovered the little jewelry box we were using as a Wiseman's gift.  He forgot all about the shepherd's staff and wouldn't put the Wiseman's gift down.  The only way we got him to do his part in our little play was to let a him, as a shepherd, bring a gift to the baby Jesus, although he kept the gift for himself to play with.

Thankfully the whole play is on video!
