The Mormon Battalion

During some free time we had last weekend while in San Diego for my brother Mark's wedding we took the kids to the Mormon Battalion Visitor's Center near Old Town.  I'm not sure we have ever taken our kids there and it has been significantly remodeled since I had last been there.

The Mormon Battalion consisted of almost 500 Mormon pioneers who were asked to join with the U.S. Army in the War with Mexico in 1846 .  These men, and a few women, marched over 2,000 miles leaving behind their families who were making their way to the Salt Lake Valley.

Among the Battalion was Paul's 3rd Great Grandfather, William Strong.

At the age of 18, William volunteered to join with the Battalion in Council Bluffs, Iowa taking the place of his father, Jacob, who was in poor health.

While at the Visitor's Center we learned about the sacrifices that were made by the members of the Battalion as well as what life was like for them and the influence they had on others.

All my girls said their favorite part of our trip to San Diego was going to the Mormon Battalion Visitor's Center.

It could be because it was so cool and child friendly, (I wish history class in high school was presented in such a cool way, I probably would have paid more attention).

Jacob & his new "besty", Abi

It could be because we got to experience it with Uncle Mike, Aunt Kasey & their kids.

Or perhaps they felt the spirit as they learned about "These. . .ordinary people who did extraordinary things because of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ."

No matter what their reason I feel we owe a heartfelt "Thank You" to Great-Great-Great Grandpa William Strong for his testimony shared through his sacrifice to serve his country.
