Home Makeover: Part 2

If trying to keep up with four kids wasn't enough, we Paul has been doing more projects around the house.  This weekend we put the finishing touches on Rachel & Sarah's room.

Choosing a color was a bit of a challenge; Rachel wanted purple & Sarah wanted pink.  I stepped in and made an executive decision and went for a neutral yellow.  Then one day I was at the store and found some Tinkerbell wall clings and then they were both happy.

I think I may just frame the above picture, because I don't think their room will ever be that clean and tidy again.

From the time we moved in until yesterday Rachel & Sarah  have been without a dresser.  Rachel's clothes have been in a plastic storage drawer thing and Sarah's have been on a shelf in the closet and their bookcase.  I think that added to the constant disarray of their bedroom.  Thanks to my Grandma Herbert, my Aunt Judy& Uncle Kenny, Grandma Sue & Grandpa Steve and Paul the girls have a beautiful fun dresser in their bedroom.

Let me explain; many many years ago, I think I was in high school my Mom and her siblings were going through my Grandparents home after my Grandma had passed away and Grandpa went to live in a care center.  I mentioned that I liked Grandma's dresser and would like it if no one wanted it, so my Aunt & Uncle kindly took it to their home for safe keeping until we could move it to California.  I had long since left home, moved to Utah, got married, moved to Kentucky and still  had never gone to retrieve the dresser.  In fact I had forgotten what it even looked like.  Then this last winter my Mom and Steve went to spend the winter in Arizona, so I asked my Mom (since they had their truck & 5th wheel with them) if when they went to Douglas to visit Uncle Kenny & Aunt Judy if they could get the dresser and take it with them back to Utah until one day we moved closer and I could get it from them.  They kindly did just that.

When they drove Elizabeth home this summer from her week long visit they also brought me my Grandmother's dresser.  It was anxious to see what it looked like.  And I have to be honest, I was a little disappointed, it was ugly!  Steve said it should be used for firewood.  My Mom told me it had originally belonged to my Great Grandma Herbert.  Could I really just toss out a family heirloom that had been around that long?  It was sturdy and still very functional.  So I left the decision as to what to do with it up to Paul . . . refinish it or just get rid of  it?  We did have two little girls that were in need of a dresser. . .

Paul was up for a woodworking project so he agreed to refinish it.  It needed some minor repairs before the refinishing began. My Mom had mentioned that she thought it would look good painted a really fun color . . . that got the wheels in my mind turning,  and a fun color we did!   When we took the girls to Home Depot to choose some pulls, I really didn't like the ones they chose . . . to sparkly.   But once Paul had the dresser painted distressed a bit I decided my girls could have the pulls they wanted after all.

A friends primitive look kitchen cabinets and Tinkerbell were the inspiration for the dresser's new look. We really love how it turned out. I hope my Grandmothers like it too.

Making progress on the painting projects! Love the dresser, it is so pretty now! Who knew? But I guess when you have a hubby as handy as Paul anything can be made to look that good!
