Stop to See Some Sights
On our drive from Kentucky to Arizona we didn't stop and play tourist very often because well . . . the kids would rather get to the hotel and go swimming. Besides we were driving across I-40 in July at is was HOT and HUMID a good part of the way. The kids were content to see things from the van. We did make a stop to see Petrified Forrest National Park & the Painted Desert.
I stopped there once as a kid with my family, but apparently it did not make much of an impression because I don't remember much about it, other than wondering how does wood get petrified?
Paul & I really enjoyed our stop, and I think John did too. As we drove we heard these two things from John more times than I care to count, "I want to go home" and "Go hiking?" I was hoping that we could do a little hiking through the Petrified Forrest but Rachel knows how to read and could read the temperature that is displayed inside the van, and she did nothing but complain when we were outside in the heat. So our exploring was kept to a minimum.
But we did see a few really cool logs that felt more like rocks and looked more like rocks than wood. I found this totally fascinating, perhaps I should have been a geologist?
We also saw some Native American ruins. I asked the kids if they would like to live in a house about the size of one of their bed rooms and they looked at me like I was crazy. But that is all the bigger the area was for a family to live in the ruins that we saw.
We also saw petroglyphs near the ruins.

After dragging the kids around in the heat, and bright sun they fell asleep quickly. Too bad we had to stop just a little ways down the road to get gas and eat. The Petrified Forrest is not too far away, I think we will have to go back in the fall or spring when it is cooler and we can enjoy the experience a lot more.
