Hiking again . . .

Last Monday, Labor Day, we decided to go on another hike. As we were driving there Rachel asked, “Why do we always have to go hiking?” “Don’t you like to go hiking?” was my response. “Yes,” she said, “but why do we always have to go on the days we don’t have school? I want to stay home and play with my toys.” I am so grateful for kids who are simple to please and know how to “enjoy being a kid”. “You’ll have time to play with toys when we get home,” I answered.

The areas surrounding where we live are full of arches of all shapes and sizes. Our hike took us down amongst the trees, so many and so thick that it was significantly cooler the closer we got to the arch. So cool that Elizabeth was saying she wished she had a jacket. The rest of us thought it was a perfect hiking temperature.

The trail led us under and through the arch to the other side where we walked down this cool slot canyon. The girls thought it looked like something from Star Wars. Unfortunately none of those pictures turned out, but we have plenty of others of the beautiful arch.

We took a brief stop to have a snack and climb on some rocks.

And with all of the rocks, of all shapes and sizes, John was so happy. He hiked the whole way carrying rocks so he could throw them in any body of water that we may have found. There was only a little stream, but he was happy to pick up rocks and throw them in the bushes. On the way home when we asked the kids what they liked about our hike John said, “Throw rocks in the bushes.”

From the same trail head where we parked there was a short walk to a “look-out” so of course we had to go ”look”.

On our way the kids learned to identify the state flower of Kentucky, Goldenrod. The fields on either side of the trail were full on Goldenrod in bloom and were beautiful. The view from the look-out was exactly what I thought it would be trees, trees and more trees in every direction.

To answer Rachel’s question, why we always have to go hiking when Daddy has a day off work, the kids are out of school and the weather is nice . . . because we are creating family memories of time spent together!

Cutest kids ever! My kids probably feel the same way about hiking, but they always talk about it for days after, so I know they really do enjoy it.
