Pioneer Hertiage

Paul's family history is thick with ancestors of Mormon Pioneer heritage. He has ancestors on all sides who crossed the plains to the Salt Lake Valley. Four of those had settled in and were buried in Grantsville, UT. So while we were there we had Steve help us locate them in the cemetery.

Aroet Lucius Little Hale & Olive Whittle Hale are Paul's 3rd Great Grandparents.

They were among the many faithful pioneers who sacrificed so much to find a life free of persecution. Aroet was acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith while he was a boy in Nauvoo. Both of his parents died at Council Bluffs, Iowa on their way west. But true to his Mother's last wishes he continued on at the age of 18 with his 3 younger siblings to the Salt Lake. He met Olive on the trek west and after a getting settled in the Valley they were married. They had six children together and unfortunately Olive died while her children were all very young. Aroet went on to have three other wives and many more children. He was a prominent member of the community and the last five years of his life he served as Patriarch. The Hale name is still very well known in Grantsville.

William Riley Judd and Ann Jane Reid Judd are Paul's 2nd Great-Grandparents.

They too crossed the plains to settle with the saints in Salt Lake. And then later came to Grantsville. William, who went by his middle name of Riley, at the age of 16 drove a team across the plains for a widow and her daughter. From his record of the trek one could learn that he had a good sense of humor. Anne was Riley's second wife, they had 6 children together. They too were well known in their community and well loved by all who knew them.

As we were looking for the original Hale home in Grantsville, Steve took us to a lady who lived across the street from the Hale home. Her home was built by Leonard Hale, one of Aroet's children from another wife. This lady told Steve that her sister had some original papers that belonged to Riley Judd. The papers were found just a few years ago in the attic of this old home. Paul was able to get a copy of these papers. Among them are pedigree charts and many hand written stories by Paul's 2nd great-Grandfather Riley Judd. We learned that the Hale's and the Judd's were very good friends with one another and at least two children from the Hale family married children of the Judd family.

The Spirit of Elijah is alive and well in turning the "heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their father".
