Local History Lesson

Last weekend we were blessed with beautiful weather, and after some bitter cold days we have had this month we had to get out and do something outside. After a little creative thinking we decided to go and take in some of our local history by visiting a civil war battlefield (less than an hour away). The Battle of Mill Springs was 148 years ago, on January 19, 1862.

Here come the Union Troops!

I wonder how effective John would have been in battle using tree bark and sticks as a weapon?

The Battle of Mill Springs lasted only about 4 hours. Most of the battle was fought over terrain covered in trees and on hill sides. I have come away with a much greater respect for those men who fought and sacrificed for a cause they wholeheartedly believed in.

It was a victory for the Union Army. Approximately 148 Confederate Soldiers and 50 Union Soldiers died in this battle.

Paul and I really enjoyed learning about some Early American History, even Elizabeth took a little interest in things. Her first question when we arrived was, "Why does their flag look like that?" Mostly the kids enjoyed running, collecting leaves and just being outside. But I think the best part was just being together!

The civil war has a very special place in my heart because we had family in it. I have always loved the stories. I would love to have walked where you walked. Thanks for sharing.
