Pumpkin Guts
As a kid I loved the annual event of carving the Halloween Pumpkin. Was it going to be scary or happy? Would it have triangle eyes or square ones? Would it have three teeth or none at all?
But I never did like sticking my hand inside that pumpkin to remove all of the "guts", you know the slimy seeds and wet stringy stuff. Somewhere along the way as a mom I learned to buck up, stick my hand in and pull all that yucky stuff out, with a smile on my face telling my kids how much fun it was, in hopes that my kids would not inherit their mother's aversion to pumpkin guts.
So far I've been 75% successful. Elizabeth & John can't get enough of running their hands through that slimy stuff and Rachel tolerates it.
Sarah on the other hand is a work in progress. The whole pumpkin carving event was a bit traumatic for her. She did not like to see her precious little pumpkin cut open and she definitely did not want anything to do with the "guts". I thought she would like her pumpkin again once it had a cute smiling face, but she still was not satisfied. Once we lit the candle inside she regained some interest, but I think she was still miffed that I had "ruined" her pumpkin friend.
Seeing these pretty glowing pumpkins and the fun my kids (and Paul) had making their very own jack-o-lantern is well worth putting my hand in pumpkin guts.
