Summer
School is out and summer is officially here!! To kick off our summer we decided to go exploring. We headed to Pickett County State Park in Tennessee. To our delight we found a beautiful place to hike, play and maybe one day we'll come back to go camping. And all of this is only 30 minutes from our house; why has it taken us so long to discover?
We went on a couple of short hikes through the forest. Sarah loved being able to walk like a big kid, Elizabeth collected leaves, Rachel was the "line leader" and John enjoyed all of the dirt, rocks, sticks, and water.
Our first destination was a place called Indian Rockhouse, a rock overhang that created a wonderful shady enclosure. Due to the recent rains there was a baby waterfall trickling over the rock overhang, creating a large puddle at the bottom. Just perfect for John to throw rocks in.
We had a hard time getting John to leave. We had to convince him that we were going to find more water. It's a good thing that we did!
For our second hike Sarah got to ride in the back pack because she was getting sleepy. We wore her right out on our first hike because it wasn't long before she was asleep.

I was very pleased at how well all of the kids did hiking. Maybe I will be able to take one of my hobbies off of the shelf soon?

We hiked to a place called Hazard Cave. It is a huge rock shelter (the blackness in the picture below goes in about 100 feet) with a sandy bottom and a small creek flowing across the front: all of the ingredients to make a kid happy.
We had an absolutely wonderful time being together as a family,
